A Child Learns What They Live.
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. This Artwork is a collage I created in response to my work as a Marriage & Family Therapist and Art Therapist in San Diego North County.
A few years back, I worked in a community mental health setting, often with children who had witnessed intimate partner violence. Many of them had also experienced abuse themselves.
Children learn what they live and often know it is safer to hide. They hide what they think, feel, and need.
I have also worked with adults who grew up with violence in their homes as children and were caught in an intergenerational cycle.
They were living what they learned.
If you are experiencing intimate partner violence contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline: 800.799.SAFE (7233)
I’m now a Therapist in San Marcos in private practice, empowering quiet, anxious kids as a Child Therapist and providing Anxiety Therapy in San Marcos for Adults (wounded grown-up kids) to express themselves with art therapy. The roots of anxiety are often found in childhood trauma.
